The United States Postal Service has always been there for us when we need them the most. They are not the type of people who allow themselves to be easily deterred from completing their tasks.
We have all heard their motto, too. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. Of course, there are always exceptions to any rule.
The United States Postal Service does not have to continue delivering mail when they are at risk of being shot. Gunfire is not part of this equation for them. The Windy City is currently experiencing this issue firsthand. Their mail carriers have become quite fearful as of late. A South Side mail carrier was recently shot while making her rounds.
This is causing other mail carriers to seriously reconsider their job duties. After all, no one is looking to get shot while they are in the midst of delivering mail. We respect the mail carriers that are still taking the risk but we hope that they are doing everything in their power to remain safe. CBS Chicago has the report.
“Chicago postal workers, saying it is too dangerous to deliver the mail, are threatening to stop delivering in some neighborhoods one week after a mail carrier was shot on her route. Postal workers and community organizers joined together for a prayer vigil Thursday near the scene of last week’s shooting.
The 24-year-old mail carrier remains hospitalized. She was shot four times during a drive-by shooting in the Burnside neighborhood.” These are harrowing words to read.
It is easy to see why the mail carriers have had enough at the moment. The city is doing its best to track down the shooters, even offering a $50,000 reward to anyone who offers up valuable information.
We are not going to hold our breath on this one. The “no snitching” ethos remains strong on the South Side of Chicago. Does anyone really want to put their own life at risk in exchange for $50,000? It’s a tough ask, especially in a neighborhood like this one. The mail carrier who was shot was not even the target.
She wasn’t in the wrong neighborhood and she did not lose track of her surroundings. This is the same neighborhood that she delivers mail to each day. Why would anyone ever try to kill a postal carrier like this?
If this story seems insane to you, that’s because it is. These gang warfare shootings bring about far more casualties than expected.
The carnage is not merely limited to those who have chosen this lifestyle. In these instances, innocent taxpayers are left to grapple with what has taken place. There’s no universe in which a mail carrier should be this terrified but this is the world we now live in.
The thugs are not showing much sympathy either. Mail carriers have been being shot by paintball guns that are filled with red pellets.
This dirty trick is designed to make people think that they have fatally wounded, as you might have guessed. Work stoppages could be coming next but these workers are not going to be able to go on strike.
Technically, this practice is not legal. However, there is no politician on earth who would want to be the one who is telling these people to literally go outside and risk their lives to make sure that the mail is still delivered.
Even on their best days, there are a number of Chicago neighborhoods that are far from safe. Now that things are going noticeably worse, we want to know who is going to step up.
The postal workers have made their fears known but no one wants to assist them. Maybe they will start to take notice when they are no longer receiving their mail in a timely manner? In the meantime, no one is keeping the Chicago streets for our most essential workers.
