COVID-19 at the Pump: Avoid Contamination

COVID-19 at the Pump: Avoid Contamination

(FinancialHealth.net) – Americans are trying really hard to protect themselves from COVID-19. Most of us are staying home more and following CDC guidelines. However, we can’t avoid activities like going to the bank and filling our gas tanks. How do we stay safe at the pump and ATM?

We recently told you about a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) study that found the virus can live on some surfaces for days. That makes touching plastic handles and pressing buttons particularly worrisome, but it doesn’t mean you should panic.

Take extra steps to protect yourself while you’re at the pump and ATM:

  • Clean surfaces with disinfectant wipes before you touch anything.
  • Wear gloves when you can.
  • Grab the gas pump handle with a napkin or paper towel.
  • Use hand sanitizer before you get into the car.
  • Wash your hands regularly.

The CDC tweeted a helpful video to show everyone how they should wash their hands.

The virus is certainly scary, but there’s no reason to believe it can’t be avoided. If you practice good hygiene and social distancing, you can greatly reduce your chances of contracting COVID-19.
